Their marriage was considered almost perfect; among those couples are Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, Seal and Heidi Klum, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. Royal families aren’t immune from divorces as well. Charles and Diana divorced in 1996 after 15 years of marriage and two children. Recently Norway’s Royal Palace has announced that Princess Martha Louise and her husband Ari Behn are going to separate after 14 years of marriage. Even Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are getting divorced… We don’t want to be pessimistic but maybe it’s time to think about a prenup as an option.
Prenuptial agreement or a prenup is a contract entered into prior to marriage. More and more couples are signing prenuptial marriage agreements before they marry. However, people have been making prenups for thousands of years. Even Edward IV reportedly had a prenuptial agreement with Eleanor Butler between 1461 and 1464. Nowadays these agreements are widely spread among different couples due to increasing the number of late marriages and financial inequality of the partners. By the time they do marry, both partners have property and financial worth to protect. Prenuptial agreements make this easy to do and also help when one partner has children from the former marriages.
Why do people sign a prenup?
The reasons can be various. Some people are sure that it is a smart and modern way to enter into a marriage with a backup plan. Other – consider it absolutely non-romantic and too materialistic. Such an agreement makes sure a spouse’s separate property goes to their own children. Anyway, this step makes you think twice if you are ready to say ¨I do¨ to that person.
First of all the fact that they are ready to sign a prenup shows that the couple is not really optimistic about the marriage. But at the same time, it doesn’t mean that there is no trust between them. A prenuptial contract can protect the financial stability of you and your children. On the other hand, it can save your money and nerves if you divorce.
Sometimes it´s not necessary to spend your time and money on negotiations and lawyers. Long discussions about what goes into a prenup could be unpleasant and stressful they force the couple to confront lots of issues at the moment they are not ready for that yet. Maybe you´d better spend your money on the honeymoon?
Besides, some religions and a few people find the prenup morally repugnant. But don´t forget that this agreement was designed in order to protect the couple not to separate it.
Anyway whether to sign an agreement or not you need to discuss with your partner and strive to come to a decision that will make you both comfortable. And try to be more romantic in the end only love matters.
